USU Open House- On Wednesday, November 2 Utah State University will conduct an open house at the South Towne Expo Center for students interested in attending USU next year. Interested students should apply for admission online before attending this event. They should also bring their transcript and ACT or SAT scores to the Open House. If you qualify, you will be awarded an academic scholarship on the spot. USU Admissions staff and representatives from other offices across campus will be ready to answer all your Utah State questions. Ron Brown Scholars Program – The Ron Brown Scholar Program seeks to identify African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need. The applicant must be a US citizen or hold a permanent resident visa card. Scholarship winners will receive $10,000 annually for 4 years. The American Harlequin Dance Scholarship – This scholarship is open to students enrolled in a public or private dance school program. Applicants must be a U.S. or Canadian citizen between the ages of 15 and 21 to be eligible for this award. One (1) $5,000.00 scholarship, one (1) $4,000.00 scholarship, two (2) $3,000.00 scholarships, four (4) $2,000.00 scholarships, and two (2) $1,000.00 scholarships will be awarded. FIRE –Foundation for Individual Rights in Education Scholarship – Foundation for Individual Rights in Education is offering their fourth annual “Freedom in Academia” high school essay contest. FIRE will award $12,500 in college scholarships, including a $5,000 scholarship to the student with the best essay. The essay is to be about how American universities betray the purpose of a university and violate the constitutional guarantees of free expression as depicted in two documentaries found at thefire.org/multimedia. In addition to the $5,000 scholarship, the first place winner’s essay will be featured on FIRE’s website, and the winner will receive an all-expense-paid invitation to the 2012 Campus Freedom Network Conference in Philadelphia. The essay must be 800-1,000 words. Students may enter online at thefire.org/contests or through the mail. The deadline is November 5, 2011; the winners will announced by December 16, 2011.
23rd Annual Science Day at the U- On Saturday, November 12, 2011, High school students (grades 10-12) from around the intermountain west are invited to attend a day of science-related workshops. These interactive workshops give high school students a great look at laboratory research and career opportunities in science, math and engineering. The event is free to students, parents and educators but requires pre-registration. Lunch is provided! During the closing activities six $500 scholarship prizes will be awarded! To be considered for this special prize you must: 1) attend Science Day at the U; 2) complete the drawing form provided in your packet of materials; 3) attend the closing ceremony. The scholarship is for study at the University of Utah. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. USOE Contest – The Utah State Office of Education, Educational Equity Section, invites students to enter the 28th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Contest in honor of his birthday and lasting legacy. This contest is an opportunity for Utah’s seventh through twelfth graders to continue to find new meaning and applications for the legacy Dr. King left to the world in the area of human and civil rights. This year, in addition to the regular essay contest, there is a new video category for the contest. There will be ten grade-level winners selected for $50 cash prizes, and two of these winners will be selected for the $100 grand prize! First Freedom Student Competition – The First Freedom Student Competition is a first semester national essay and video contest. It offers high-school students an opportunity to compete for $2,500 awards as they examine the history and current-day relevance of religious freedom, and then, by written essay or video production, present their evaluation. The competition is open to 9th – 12th grade students at all levels of academic placement to participate. Emory University Scholarship – Emory Scholars and Goizueta Scholars represent an impressive array of academic, cultural, and extracurricular interest and achievements. Almost all recipients have won distinction beyond the classroom, including national awards in music, languages, science, mathematics, or other fields. Scholarship selection is based entirely upon a student’s merit: financial need is not considered. The 2012 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards- If you’ve made a difference through volunteering over the past year, you could win $1000 and a fabulous trip to Washington, D.C. next May. Even more importantly, you could win recognition that might inspire other young people to follow your example. These prestigious awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals, have honored nearly 100,000 middle and high school students at the local, state, and national level over the past 16 years solely for their volunteer work. 2011-2012 NASSP/Herff Jones Principal’s Leadership Award (PLA) – Scholarships ranging from $1000-$12,000 will be awarded to 100 outstanding seniors from all 50 states, the District of Colombia, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. Students cannot apply for this award; they must be nominated by their high school. The JATC may nominate one senior on the basis of leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience, and academic record. To be considered for the nomination, students must submit an essay explaining how they qualify for this award (essays must be typewritten and should address all areas that qualify the student for the nomination)—essay submissions are to do Jamie Vargas in the JATC main office by November 11, 2011.
Seattle’s University’s Sullivan Leadership Awards – Leaders are selected on the basis of demonstrated service, leadership, and academic achievement to receive full tuition, room and meals for each of four years of undergraduate study at Seattle University. Nine Sullivan Leadership awards are given each year. The application, along with complete admissions application, must be completed and received or postmarked on or before November 15, 2011. Candidates for the Award are required to attend the Sullivan Leaders Day competition on Sat. January 14, 2012 on the Seattle University campus. Winners will be announced in March. Susan G. Komen for the Cure College Scholarship – The Susan G. Komen for the Cure College Scholarship Award Program offers college scholarships of up to $10,000 a year over a four-year period. Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible for this scholarship: Must have lost a parent/guardian to breast cancer, OR must be a breast cancer survivor diagnosed at 25 years or younger, must be a high school senior, college freshman, sophomore or junior, must plan to attend a state-supported college or university in the state where they permanently reside (students in Washington DC can attend state-supported schools in Maryland or Virginia), must have a high school and/or college GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale, must be no older than 25 years old by May 2012, must be a U.S. citizen, or documented permanent resident of the U.S. (or US Territory), and never at any time have been subject to any disciplinary action by any institution or entity, including, but not limited to, any educational or law enforcement agency, and must be a driven advocate for breast cancer education and research who is able to complete a minimum of 20 hours of community service per semester. The UHEAA Super Short Essay Scholarship Contest – During this year’s College Financial Aid Night tour, high school students have an opportunity to win a $250 scholarship for writing a super short, 500 word essay. Comcast Leaders & Achievers Scholarship – This program, funded through the Comcast Foundation, recognizes high school seniors from Comcast communities for their commitment to community service, academics, and demonstrated leadership. To acknowledge these accomplishments, recipients of the award will receive a one-time grant of $1,000.
Requirements:
- Full-time high school senior currently enrolled at a high school within a Comcast Community.
- Student grade point average of 2.8 or higher.
- Demonstrate leadership abilities in school activities or through work experiences.
- Strong commitment to and involvement in community service.
- Plan to attend an accredited, nonprofit college, university, or vocational/technical school in the United States.
Employees of Comcast, its subsidiaries and affiliates, and the children and other family members of Comcast employees and employees of Comcast’s subsidiaries and affiliates are not eligible. The Jordan Applied technology Center will nominate one senior to be considered for this award. If a student wishes to be considered JATC’s nominee, they must submit a 250 word essay that describes their leadership abilities and experience, their commitment to community service and their intentions for continuing their education beyond high school. Essays are due back to the JATC main office (to Jamie Vargas) by November 30, 2011.
