Governor’s Honors Academy (GHA) at Southern Utah University – This opportunity is for JUNIORS with a 3.75 GPA (ACT/SAT score recommended). Students will be selected based on excellence through academics, leadership, extracurricular activities, personal achievement, and community service. Accepted applicants will attend a 10-day Academy at SUU. Academy participants will be given leadership and teamwork opportunities and the chance to interact with leaders in business, technology, humanities, science, education, communication, and social science. The Mountain America Credit Union Scholarship – The Mountain America Credit Union scholarships are financial awards based on skill, scholastic ability, financial need, community service and employment plans. Ivory Homes Scholarship (U of U) – Ivory Homes scholarships are available to students who have demonstrated experience serving and working with the Latina/Latino community. Magic of Saving Video Contest- Zions Bank is sponsoring a video contest for Utah (and Idaho) students in grades 7-12 who are between the ages of 13 to 18 as of April 1, 2012. The Dream Weber University Program – Imagine yourself at Weber State University next fall, with tuition costs covered. The Dream Weber program helps qualified students meet the financial challenges of attending the university. To be eligible for the Dream Weber Program: Be a Utah resident pursuing an undergraduate degree, have a household income of $25,000 or less, be Pell Grant eligible, and complete the FAFSA application before March 1st. Utah State- Quinney Natural Resource Scholarship – The College of Natural Resource will award four Quinney Scholarships ($3,600 per year, 4 years) to freshmen and incoming students for the 2012-2013 academic school year. Selection criteria includes: Scholarly achievement: High academic performance, special consideration given to Honors, Advanced Placement, and classes related to the applicant’s chosen major (e.g. science and math courses), ACT composite of 23 or higher, activities/leadership: involvement in school clubs, leadership experience, related internships or extracurricular activities, ability to communicate effectively, and personal interest, motivation and desire to better understand and contribute to a field involving natural resources. U of U / ACCESS Program for Women in Science and Mathematics – ACCESS exists to increase the retention of women in science and mathematics. Participants attend a seven week integrated science course designed specifically for the ACCESS program during the summer before your first year at the University of Utah, which can be applied to your general education requirements. They also become familiar with College of Science faculty, facilities, staff, and their ACCESS peers. In short, the summer course establishes their academic and social support system. Must be admitted to the U of U. as a matriculated (degree seeking) student. During the freshman year, each student is placed in a university research lab in the field of her choice. University of Utah- Oasis of Hope Scholarship – The Oasis of Hope Scholarship is available to undergraduate students who demonstrate academic promise and financial need and plan to enroll full time at the University of Utah in Fall 2012. Selection criteria include: minimum 3.5 GPA, exhibits motivation and commitment to school and his/her community as demonstrated through his/her academic performance, leadership, community, service, and extracurricular activities. University of Utah – Bioscience High School Summer Research Program – The Department of Biology at the University of Utah invites students to apply for the Bioscience High School Summer Research Program. The goal of this program is to stimulate interest in science by giving high school students a substantive experience in a basic research setting. The eight-week program will be held from June 11 through Aug. 3 and will emphasize research in biology. Students currently in their junior or senior year in high school are invited to apply. Utah State – Phi Kappa Iota/SAE Scholarship To be eligible for this grant through the SAE Foundation, students must be children or grandchildren of an active member of the Phi Kappa Iota/SAE fraternity. SLCC –Teacher Recruitment Scholarship – The Teacher Recruitment Scholarship will provide scholarships to diverse high school graduates from the Jordan School District and surrounding Districts, who are interested in becoming a teacher. Scholarship awards will be determined by each of the participating Districts. Recipients will be encouraged to return to their sponsoring district to teach after completing their degree. Each scholarship will be renewable for a second year at Salt Lake Community College based on maintaining a minimum of a 2.5 GPA. Scholarship funds will cover the cost of full-time tuition and fees, and approximately $1,000 per year for books/supplies. Students must plan to enroll for full time (12 or more credits). You must apply (online or in person, $40) and be accepted for admission as a student at Salt Lake Community College, unless you took a concurrent class in high school. Susan W. Coda Memorial Scholarship – This scholarship is available to females who are graduating high school seniors who plan to attend college out of the state of Utah. Recipients of the scholarship will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement and community involvement as well as personal and professional goals. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.8 or higher; financial need is not a consideration. The amount of the scholarship is not specified. See Jamie in the JATC main office for an application. South High Alumni Association Scholarship – These are SLCC scholarships available to any direct descendent of a South High School alumnus who wishes to attend Salt Lake Community College. The scholarships offered are for half tuition for Fall semester 2012 and Spring semester 2013. Some awards for students whose performance has been of an outstanding nature may be selected to receive full tuition awards. Cliff Weiss Memorial Essay Contest – The Association for Career and Technical Education sponsors an essay contest in the memory of former ACTE Senior Director of Communications Cliff Weiss. Cliff Weiss had a passion for career and technical education. Entrants must be either secondary or postsecondary students enrolled in at least one career and technical education course. Entries must be submitted between Feb. 1 and March 9. Winners will be announced by the end of March. The essays include persuasive essay (secondary and postsecondary) and Open Multimedia essay (all levels). Be sure to describe how the loss of your parent/guardian impacted your college plans (e.g., your ability to afford college, attend the college of your choice, etc.) Explain how the lack of adequate life insurance coverage impacted your family’s financial situation. The Utah Society of Professional Engineers Scholarship – The Utah Society of Professional Engineers (USPE) is offering a $1,000 scholarship. To be eligible a student must: be a US citizen, be a high school senior in Utah with a 3.5 GPA or higher, have scored at least a 30 in math and a 26 in English on the ACT, and be planning to major in engineering at an ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) accredited engineering program in Utah. The Tanner Human Rights Center 2012 Scholarship - Cyber-bullying – the use of social networking, e-mail, and other internet technologies to harass, embarrass, and demean others – is a growing problem among young people. About one third (32%) of all teenagers who use the internet say they have been targets of a range of annoying and potentially menacing online activities-such as receiving threatening messages; having their private emails or text messages forwarded without consent; having an embarrassing picture posted without permission; or having rumors about them spread online. On March 22, 2011, Senate Bill 304 (SB 304), which adds cyber-bullying and hazing to an existing anti-bullying prevention policy, was signed by Gov. Gary Herbert. SB 304 was proposed by Utah State Sen. Ralph Okerlund (R-Monroe), who is said to have been motivated to take action after learning the sad fate of a young boy from his district who was the victim of cyber-bullying. The child was so severely harassed over the Internet and at school that he saw no other escape than to commit suicide. Now the University of Utah has created an essay scholarship contest that addresses the issue. Essay Question: Of course a new law alone won’t be enough to eradicate cyber-bullying. What concrete, practical steps can individuals, especially young people, schools, and other institutions, take to reduce the frequency of cyber-bullying and the harm it causes? Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program – The Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program provides Kohl’s an annual opportunity to recognize and reward young volunteers who help make their communities a better place. The nomination form can be accessed at Kohlskids.com beginning February 1st until March 15, 2012. Students must be nominated by someone aged 21 years or older. Parents may nominate their own children. Nominations should describe how the Student has contributed to the community in a meaningful way by performing volunteer services that helped non-family members. The volunteer activity must have occurred within the last 12 months (March 16, 2011-March 15, 2012). Financial need or academic performance will not be considered in the review and selection of winners. Nomination forms will be separated into two age groups: ages 6-12 and ages 13-18. Utah State University - Mathematics & Statistics Scholarships – The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Utah State University offers a number of scholarships directly to students declaring majors in mathematics and statistics. YouthLinc Service Scholarship - The Youthlinc Utah Young Humanitarian Award celebrates young people who excel at giving back to their communities. The YouthLinc Service Scholarship offers a $5,000 college scholarship to Utah’s outstanding young humanitarian, with three “runner-up” awards of $1,000. Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center Scholarship (University of Utah)- Eligibility requirements include: cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher, resident of Utah, and admittance to the University of Utah working on a BA/BS/BFA (undergraduate students) or admittance to a graduate program (graduate students). Applicant consideration is based on academic performance, extra-curricular activities, personal goals and letters of recommendation, financial need, and special consideration. The Utah Association of Independent Insurance Agents (UAIIA) - UAIIA is offering a minimum of three scholarships ranging from $750 to $1000 in 2012 to Utah high school seniors who have maintained at least a 3.0 GPA and are active in extra-curricular activities through their school, church, community or work. One scholarship will be awarded to a student pursuing an insurance career, and the others to students pursuing insurance or business degrees. Engineering Scholars Competition- Northrop Grumman Corp will award two individual scholarships of $10,000 — payable in $2,500 installments over four years — these scholarships will be available to high school seniors living in Salt Lake, Davis, Utah or Weber counties, near the company’s Navigation Systems Division facility in Salt Lake City. Each applicant must be a graduating senior in the spring of 2012 from a public or accredited private high school. Scholarship program candidates must have achieved a minimum composite SAT score of 1700 or ACT score of 27, as well as a minimum GPA of 3.5. T.H. Bell teaching Scholarship – The T. H. Bell Teaching Incentive Loan (TIL) is funded by the Utah State Legislature. TIL recipients are required to pursue an educator preparation program, obtain educator licensing, and then teach in Utah public schools for a period equal to the time they received assistance. To qualify for a Utah Educator License, a recipient must receive a cleared background/fingerprint check at the time of licensing AND have a visa or citizenship status that will allow the recipient to be employed in the United States. The TIL consists of a waiver (of tuition and fees at the Utah public institutions and $995.00 per semester at private institutions) to be used for a period not exceeding 8 semesters. The program is jointly administered by the State Board of Education and the State Board of Regents. 2012 Financial Literacy Scholarship-The Utah Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy (UJ$C) and the Utah Higher Education Assistance Authority (UHEAA) are sponsoring four $1000 scholarships. Applicant must: 1 be a Utah high school senior at an accredited Utah school who has successfully completed or is currently enrolled in the financial literacy course required for graduation and 2) plan to pursue post-secondary education. U. S. Bank Scholarship Program – This Scholarship program is available to high school seniors (graduating in the 2011-2012 school year) and college undergraduates. Winners will be selected at random. Weber State University Alumni Scholarships- Scholarships through the Weber State University Alumni Association will be awarded based on a number of criteria. Preference is given to students who are sponsored by a Dues Paying Member of the Weber State Alumni Association. Jordan Credit Union Scholarships - Scholarship Accounts (basically a savings account for members 17 and younger)- For every $5 that is deposited in a scholarship account, a ticket is generated for a drawing for a scholarship. Jordan Credit Union provides five (5) $1,000 scholarships, and one (1) grand prize scholarship at $2,000. Memorial Scholarship – Members who are seniors in high school can fill out an application for this $2,000 scholarship. The recipient is determined by drawing. Drawings are held in March.
