Weber State University Freshman Wildcat Welcome – Wildcat Welcome is an open house-style event for prospective students, parents, and counselors to visit WSU and experience this amazing place firsthand.  Students can attend Major Fest where representatives from WSU’s 230 majors will be on hand to talk about their programs and answer questions. For more information visit the Major Fest website at http://www.weber.edu/SSC/majorfest.html.  One of the best reasons to come to Wildcat Welcome is that all students who are admitted and qualify for an academic scholarship will walk away from campus with their scholarship offer in hand! That means you can get your scholarship award much earlier than normal!

At Wildcat Welcome you can: get your scholarship offer and accept it, take a campus tour, explore WSU majors and programs at Major Fest (happening the same day); attend information sessions on topics like paying for college, choosing a career, getting involved in campus life, and much more.  Students must be admitted and submit the online scholarship application before the scholarship deadline of January 9, 2012. UVU Wolverine Ambassador Scholarship- Utah Valley University Wolverine Ambassador Program is designed for top student leaders, providing opportunities for leadership development through a variety of activities involving recruitment, campus outreach, and much more.  The unique role of being a Wolverine Ambassador places you in a continuously visible position. Please be aware, this program requires a significant amount of time as our Ambassadors are involved in many aspects of UVU recruitment. The award amount for Wolverine Ambassadors is $1000 per semester.  To be considered for the award, students must: be a first time freshman or transfer student, have Utah residency, have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or above, and have made significant contributions to their schools and communities through involvement, leadership and service. Utah State Alumni Legacy Scholarship – This scholarship is available to all high school seniors who plan on attending Utah State University and have a parent or grandparent that attended Utah State. To be considered for this scholarship, potential recipients will have previously applied and been accepted at USU. The monetary amount and number of scholarships awarded is determined annually dependent upon funds raised by the chapter. Information is available in the Guidance Office. AXA Achievement Community Scholarship - The AXA Achievement Community Scholarship Program brings advice and access to higher education into every community in which AXA has a presence. Every AXA Advisors’ branch office nationwide distributes up to twelve $2,000 scholarships to high school seniors who live and attend high school in their area. Selection of winners, known as AXA Achievers, is made by our nonprofit partner, Scholarship America. An AXA Achiever must demonstrate: ambition and drive, determination to set and reach goals, respect for self, family and community, and ability to succeed in college. For more info and to apply online, visit www.axa-achievement.com.  Deadline: February 1, 2012.

Regents Scholarship – Applicants need 4 yrs. English, 4 yrs. progressive mathematics, 3.5 yrs. of social science, 3 yrs. of natural science (Biology, Physics & Chemistry) and 2 yrs. of the same foreign language.  This is subject to change.  Please read all information on official website: www.higheredutah.org/scholarship_ info/.   The amount of the award varies per year.  Priority deadline is December 20th (Complete application and all documentation must be received by this date for priority status). Deadline:  February 1, 2012.

New Century Scholarship – Applicants must finish their Associate Degree by the end of spring semester 2012, have a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.5 and a college GPA of at least 3.0.  The initial application must be filed by no later than February 1, 2012.  Go to the following website for complete details and to complete, print, and mail the application http://www.higheredutah.org/scholarship_info/new-century-scholarship/. Deadline: February 1, 2012.  Pay attention to the “checklist for 2012 graduates.”  You will need to file additional documentation prior to September 1, 2012.

Utah State Ambassadors Scholarship – The Ambassador Scholarship is awarded annually to incoming freshmen and transfer students. The scholarship is awarded for up to eight semesters for freshman and up to four semesters for transfers, provided a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and 12 credits per semester are maintained and the recipient participates in all ambassador functions as assigned by the Admissions Office. As an ambassador, students meet weekly to coordinate and perform recruitment activities. While on scholarship, ambassadors are asked to participate in a variety of recruitment events including high school visits, student host weekends, campus tours, and other recruitment programs. Additional participation in recruitment committees and campus involvement is encouraged.  Incoming freshman applicants must have a minimum index of 108 and ACT of 21 or SAT of 980.  Portfolio submission is required with application.  Visit http://www.usu.edu/admissions/docs/ambassadorApplication.pdf for details and to download the application. Young Network Professionals Scholarship Award-This award honors high school seniors who have demonstrated high-tech experience and leadership abilities in their schools and communities. All applicants must be high school seniors who have taken, or are currently taking, the Novell CNA or SUSE LINUX Fundamentals course and who have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0. One grand-prize winner will receive a $3,000 scholarship, while additional winners will receive scholarships up to $2,000.  For complete details and application, visit http://www.schools.utah.gov/cte/it_competition.html Deadlinepostmarked by Friday, February 3, 2012.

Point Scholarship -This scholarship is for students who are underprivileged, especially those who have been abandoned by family and other support systems because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Since its inception in 2001, Point has invested more than $3 million in outstanding lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students. This year the foundation will invest more than $1M in the scholarship recipients. A Point Scholarship covers tuition, books, supplies, room and board, transportation and living expenses, and is set up with the individual college to meet the needs of the Point Scholar. The average scholarship award per scholar is $13,600. The average total program expense that includes scholarship funding, mentoring and leadership training is $34,000 per year per scholar. In exchange, all Point Scholars agree to maintain a high level of academic performance and give back to the LGBT community through the completion of an individual community service project. Each Point Scholar makes a personal investment in their own future by either working while studying or acquiring debt to help finance their education. Dixie State Ambassadors Scholarship – The Ambassador program is a student leadership organization representing Dixie State College to potential students and their families as well as the community, state, nation, and world. Student Ambassadors aid the School Relations Department by giving campus tours, visiting high schools, attending college fairs, working in the office, and answering phone calls. Ambassadors work to provide potential students with a knowledge and understanding of college life at Dixie State College.   Ambassador positions require full-time enrollment of at least 12 credit hours, maintaining a 3.0 GPA, and involvement at various Dixie State College functions.  All scholarship applicants must first be admitted to Dixie State College to be considered.  Application includes letters of recommendation, an essay, and a 5 minute “this is me” DVD or scrapbook highlighting your interests.  Visit http://new.dixie.edu/financial/scholarships/ambassadorleadership.php for complete details and application.  Deadline: February 15, 2012.

AFA Teens for Alzheimer’s Awareness College Scholarship- As more and more families across America are affected by Alzheimer’s disease, many teenagers are becoming aware of this heartbreaking brain disease—from personal experiences in their own families, watching friends and neighbors, or involvement in community service. Recognizing this, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA), a national nonprofit organization, has created a division specifically for teens, AFA Teens. Its goals include raising awareness among teenagers and the general public about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias; providing education, counseling and support to young family members; enabling teens to share feelings with other teens and experts; and referring teens and their family members to supportive services.  In a further effort to provide an outlet for teenagers to express their thoughts about Alzheimer’s disease and to engage the younger generation in this cause, AFA is pleased to offer the AFA Teens for Alzheimer’s Awareness College Scholarship—an annual $5,000 scholarship awarded to one deserving college-bound student, and $500 and $250 scholarships awarded to the first and second runners-up, respectively.  Application includes a brief autobiography in essay format and an essay about Alzheimer’s disease.  For complete details and to apply online, visit http://www.afateens.org/about_new.html Deadline:  February 15, 2012.

Narratives of Bravery & Hope ScholarshipThe Utah Chapter of the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME) is sponsoring the narratives of bravery & hope: ordinary people united for extraordinary change scholarship for Middle/Jr. High and High School Students.  Application includes an essay-details are posted at utahname.org/scholarship_essay.  Two scholarships ($500) will be awarded to middle/jr. high students and four scholarships ($1000) will be awarded to high school students.  Deadline: Wednesday, February 15, 2012 by 5:00pm.

Women’s Italian-American Civic League Scholarship – Applicants must be of Italian ancestry and a 2012 graduate of a Utah school. The scholarships awarded are based on ACT (40%), exceptional high school academic ability (40%), and extracurricular (school, Church, community service, work related) involvement (20%). A personal essay (300 words or less) describing applicant’s Italian ancestry and how this ancestry has influenced their lives are required. To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must be admitted to a chosen institute of higher education. Applications are available online at: www.italianamericancivicleague.com.  Amount: $1,000 Deadline: February 7, 2012.

The KFC Colonel’s Scholars – The KFC Colonel’s Scholars Program is dedicated to assisting students with financial need who plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree.  To qualify, a student must graduate from high school, have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher, enroll in a college or university, and pursue a bachelor’s degree.  Students complete their application online at www.kfcscholars.org.  The online application will be available from December 1, 2011 through February 8, 2012.  Students will be asked to provide pertinent information about themselves and their family life, their activity level during high school, and compose a few short answer responses to various questions.  The online application will allow the student to save their work as they go.  Deadline:  February 8, 2012.

National Co-Op Scholarship Program – Students who receive this scholarship must be admitted and plan to attend one of seven participation institutions (Drexel University, Johnson & Wales University, Kettering University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Cincinnati, University of Toledo, or Wentworth Institute of Technology).  These are renewable, $6000.00 scholarships.  Learn more about this incredible opportunity and apply online at www.co-op.edu. Best Buy Scholarship – Best Buy wants to help students prepare for a brighter future, which starts with a college education.  The program will award scholarships to students in grades 9-12 who plan to enter a full-time undergraduate course of study upon high school graduation.  Up to 1,200 students will each receive a $1,000 scholarship.  If you’re a 9-12 grade students who plans to attend post-secondary education, have solid grades and are involved in community service or work experience, you are encouraged to apply.  The application closes on February 15, 2012.   A helpful hint…don’t wait until the last couple days to apply as the scholarship application site experiences heavy traffic at the close of the program.  No late applications will be accepted.  Applications are online at:  www.bestbuy-communityrelations.com.  Check the website in May 2012 for the winners.  Deadline:  February 15, 2012.

GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program – Honoring the legacy and character of our nation’s 40th President, the GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program rewards college bound students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship with financial assistance to pursue higher education.  Applications will be accepted online between Nov. 14, 2011 and February 17, 2012.  Candidates must: demonstrate exemplary leadership drive, integrity, and citizenship at school, at home, at the workplace, and within the community.  They must be nominated by a leader, recommended by student activity advisor, teacher, counselor, or religious leader.  Must have a GPA 3.0 or higher, demonstrate financial need, be a citizen of the United States, and use scholarship funds for student tuition, room, and board while pursuing a bachelor’s degree. Applications for the GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program will be accepted online until February 17, 2012.  Additional information, eligibility requirements, and a link to the application are available online at http://www.reaganfoundation.org/ge-scholarship.aspx. Larry H. & Gail Miller Enrichment Scholarship – Qualified students are those with demonstrated financial need and scholastic ability. Whenever possible, students will be selected from applicants whose ethnic background is under-represented in higher education in Utah or those who are first generation college students. To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must be: admitted to the University of Utah, eligible for Utah residency status for the academic year for which they are applying, and eligible to receive federal financial aid. American Cancer Society Scholarship – The Great West Division of the American Cancer Society has established a scholarship program to give young cancer survivors the opportunity to pursue their post-secondary education from an accredited university, community college or vocational technical school.  To be eligibility the applicant must be age 25 or younger at the time of application.  Must be a graduate from high school and/or continuing college in the upcoming school year, be a U.S. citizen and a resident of Utah, accepted without condition to an accredited university, college, community college or vocational technical school, must have a 2.5 GPA or above, and must become a full time student at the chosen school. Only those applicants who meet all of these eligibility requirements will be considered for scholarship awards.  Applications are online at www.cancer.org/scholarships.  Deadline:  February 24, 2012.

Buick Achievers Scholarship Program – The Buick Achievers scholarship program wants to reward students who have succeeded both inside and outside of the classroom and who may not be able to attend college without financial assistance.  Awards will be up to $25,000 per year for 100 first time freshman or existing college student, renewable up to four years and one additional year for those entering a qualified five-year engineering program.   Scholarship recipients are selected based on the following factors: academic achievement, financial need, participation and leadership in community and school activities, work experience and interest in pursuing a career in the automotive or related industry.  Special consideration will be given to the following applicants:  first-generation college, female, minority, military veteran or a dependent of military personnel.  The majority of the scholarships will be awarded to students majoring in Engineering/Technology fields.  Applications are available at www.buickachievers.scholarshipamerica.org/.  Deadline:  February 29, 2012.

CTE SCHOLARSHIPS & TUITION AWARDS – CTE Scholarships and Tuition Awards provide applicants with more than a 50 percent chance of receiving approximately $1,700 in tuition awards this year and possibly even more the next. Would you spend four hours compiling a portfolio to receive $1,700? That’s the reality of students applying for the over 110 CTE scholarships and tuition awards.

Qualifications
CTE Scholarships and Tuition Awards are open to any graduating senior student who plans to get CTE training after high school. This training must result in one of the following:

  1. an associate’s degree or less in a CTE area, or
  2. a bachelor’s degree with a teaching credential in a CTE area.

Candidates must be a legal U.S. resident, have senior status and graduate from a Utah-sponsored, public, secondary school before September 15, 2012. Please note that several colleges and universities also require a 3.0 cumulative GPA .

Immediate employment after completing training program is a requirement for all potential award recipients. Employment goal must be clearly stated in the student’s narrative. Address 1) what employment the student intends to seek and 2) how the student plans to obtain related employment once training is completed.

Each nominee must complete all aspects of the portfolio. Mail or hand deliver application to the Utah State Office of Education. Applications must be postmarked by February 27, 2012.

The keynote speaker was Sean Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens and the 6 Most Important Decisions You’ll Ever Make. He addressed the critical choices that teens face today, and how they can apply the 7 Habits to unleash their individual greatness. The keynote was followed by a number of breakout sessions.

We are looking forward to the great things ambassadors are planning for the 2011-2012 school year
