Portfolio
The purpose of the JATC College and Career Ready Student Portfolio is to help students prepare and be in a position to make that next-step transition after high school. The JATC College and Career Ready Student Portfolio is designed to give students the opportunity to experience leadership, demonstrate competency in their program of study, develop career ready skills and prepare for college.
In order to successfully complete the JATC College and Career Ready Student Portfolio, students must complete both Core and Supplemental requirements in four areas: Leadership, Program Competency, Career Readiness and College Readiness.

Requirements and documents necessary for each component of the JATC College and Career Ready Student Portfolio are detailed below.
Leadership
Core – Complete both of the following:
- Youth Leadership Organization Membership – Student must join and be an active member of their program’s CTSO. Teacher will certify membership with a signature on the Student Portfolio Tracking Sheet.
- Service Learning Project Participation – Student must participate in at least one service learning project at the JATC as approved by their program instructor. Teacher will certify participation with a signature on the Student Portfolio Tracking Sheet.
Supplemental – Complete two of the following:
- CTSO Officer- Student must serve as an officer of their program’s CTSO. Teacher will certify leadership position in CTSO with signature on the Student Portfolio Tracking Sheet.
- JATC Student Ambassador – Student must serve as a JATC Student Ambassador. A CTE Specialist will verify leadership position with signature on the Student Portfolio Tracking Sheet.
- Leadership Conference Attendance – Student must attend at least one CTSO leadership conference as certified by their program instructor on the Student Portfolio Tracking Sheet. Student will include their participation certificate in their portfolio.
- CTSO Competition Participation – Student must participate in at least one CTSO competition as certified by their program instructor on the Student Portfolio Tracking Sheet. Student will include their participation certificate in their portfolio.
- Service Learning Project Leader – Student must actively organize and implement a service learning project under the direction of a JATC staff member. Teacher or JATC staff member will certify the leadership position with a signature on the Student Portfolio Tracking Sheet.
- Mentor/Team Leader – Student must serve as a mentor or team leader in their program as certified by their instructor with a signature on the Student Portfolio Tracking Sheet.
Program Competency
Core – Complete the following:
- Student must earn a minimum grade of a “B” each quarter in their JATC program. Copies of grades from an official source (report card, transcript, Skyward) should be included in the portfolio.
Supplemental – Complete three of the following:
- Career Pathway Completion – Student will complete a Career Pathway in an area of study of their choice. A Career Pathway completion application form is available for download here. Student will include the Career Pathway Completion certificate in the portfolio. For individual pathways, see the following links:
- Senior Project Completion – Student will complete a senior project as defined and certified by their program instructor on the Student Portfolio Tracking Sheet. The senior project (whenever possible) should be included in the student portfolio.
- Presentation Skills Demonstration – Student will conduct a formal classroom presentation as defined and certified by their program instructor on the Student Portfolio Tracking Sheet. A copy of the presentation (whenever possible) should be included in the student portfolio
- Writing Sample/Student Reflection – Student will complete a student reflection writing assignment and include it in the student portfolio as assigned and certified by their program instructor on the Student Portfolio Tracking Sheet…or, alternately, student may complete this Writing Reflection Activity for inclusion in the student portfolio.
- Clinical/Practicum Completion – Student will successfully complete a clinical or practicum experience as certified by their program instructor on the Student Portfolio Tracking Sheet.
- USOE Certification – Student will achieve a USOE certification. Student can achieve a USOE Certification by successfully completing an end of course skills test. The certificate issued will be included in the student portfolio.
- Industry Certification – Student will achieve an industry certification related to their program of study as certified by inclusion of the certificate or by signature of program instructor on the Student Portfolio Tracking Sheet.
Career Readiness
Core – Complete all of the following:
- Cover Letter – Student will include a completed cover letter in their student portfolio. For guidelines on constructing a Cover Letter, follow this hyperlink to UtahFutures (link).
- Resume – Student will include a completed resume in their student portfolio. For guidelines on constructing a Resume, follow this hyperlink to UtahFutures (link).
- References – Student will include a personal reference list for use in employment pursuit in the student portfolio. For guidelines on creating a personal reference list, follow this hyperlink (link).
- Professional Dress – Student will participate in a minimum of two “Professional Dress” days as planned in their JATC program or at the school level. Certification of professional dress participation will be indicated by a JATC staff member on the Student Portfolio Tracking Sheet. For tips on professional dress see “tips for teens” as provided by Utah Department of Workforce Services.
Supplemental – Complete three of the following:
- Maintain Employment – minimum 3 months – Student will maintain employment for a minimum of three consecutive months as verified by employer on this Employment Verification Document which will be included in the student portfolio.
- Job Shadow or Externship – Student will successfully complete a job shadow program or externship as certified by their program instructor with signature on the Student Portfolio Tracking Sheet.
- “Mock” Interview Completion – Student will complete a mock job interview with a JATC staff member. The JATC staff member conducting the interview will certify successful completion of the interview with a signature on the Student Portfolio Tracking Sheet and grading rubric to be included in the student portfolio. The JATC staff member conducting the mock interview should use this Mock Job Interview Document to complete the interview and the student will include the completed document in the student portfolio.
- Attendance at School – absent no more than 3 days – Student will include a verified attendance record in the student portfolio. Attendance verifications are available from JATC’s school registrar. Attendance is verified after the end of third quarter.
- Punctuality at School – tardy no more than 4 days – Student will include a verified punctuality record in the student portfolio. Punctuality verifications are available from JATC’s school registrar. Punctuality is verified after the end of third quarter.
- Employability Skills Documentation – Student must participate in a work-based learning activity/position and have their performance evaluated for inclusion in the student portfolio on this document.
- UtahFutures Activity – Student must complete the “Occupational Sort” activity in UtahFutures. Once the Occupational Sort activity is fully completed, all worksheets and occupational lists must be printed for certification and inclusion in the student portfolio.
College Readiness
Core – Complete all of the following:
- College Report - Student must complete a College Report that compares and contrasts 3 colleges of consideration. The report will be included in the student portfolio. Guidelines for the report are available here.
- Formal College Campus Visit – Student must schedule and attend a formal campus visit at the college of their choice. Various campus visit opportunities are available and can usually be explored by visiting an institution’s website. Examples of opportunities available at some local institutions are posted at these links: The University of Utah Westminster College Utah Valley University Brigham Young University. Students will use this College Visit Document to gather information during their visit and include the report in the student portfolio.
- Scholarship Application – Student must complete and submit at least one scholarship application. Scholarship opportunities are posted on the JATC website under the “Current Students” navigation menu. A copy of the application, email confirmation or a print screen verification of the electronic submission of the application must be included in the student portfolio.
Supplemental – Complete three of the following:
- Letter of Recommendation – Student will obtain at least one letter of recommendation for use on scholarship and/or college admissions applications. Student will use the JATC “College & Scholarship Recommendation Form” available for download here. A copy of the letter of recommendation will be included in the student portfolio.
- College Essay/Writing Sample – Student will write and include a college admissions essay in their student portfolio. The CollegeBoard has essay writing tips and sample essays at this link.
- Financial Aid Seminar Attendance – Student must attend a Financial Aid Night that is sponsored by the Utah Council and UHEAA. Resource literature from the presentation must be included in the portfolio. Financial Aid Presentations, including dates and locations are posted on this link.
- CTE or other Scholarship Award – Student must receive a CTE or scholarship award. Certification of this award would be the inclusion of the award letter in the student portfolio.
- Concurrent Enrollment Credit – Student must earn Concurrent Enrollment credit from one of JATC’s partnering higher education institutions. Certification of this credit would be the inclusion of a copy of the college transcript that shows awarded credit in the student portfolio. Unofficial transcripts are satisfactory. Unofficial transcripts from the Salt Lake Community College partner can be obtained from the student’s MyPage account.
- High School Transcript – Student must include a copy of their high school transcript in their student portfolio. High school transcripts are generally available from the boundary school’s registrar’s office.
- ACT/SAT Completion – Student must include a copy of their ACT or SAT results in their portfolio.
- PLAN Test Completion – Student must include a copy of their PLAN test results in their portfolio.
- FAFSA Application – Student must complete a FAFSA application. Certification of a FAFSA submission to the federal government would be the inclusion of the Student Aid Report (SAR) in the student portfolio. The SAR is generally delivered via email 72 hours after submission of an electronic FAFSA. For more information and guidance on FAFSA submission, students should attend a Financial Aid Night sponsored by the Utah Council and UHEAA. - PSAT Completion – Student must take the PSAT/NMSQT examination in the fall of their junior year. A copy of the test results must be included in the student portfolio for certification. High schools administer the PSAT/NMSQT each October. Student should check with the Guidance Center at their boundary school for testing date and registration information.
- UtahFutures Activity – Student must complete the “Undergraduate School Sort” activity in UtahFutures. Once the activity is fully completed, the list of schools generated as well as individual school facts pages must be printed for certification and inclusion in the student portfolio.
